Ryan Gosling narrates the documentary
#ReGENERATION, while Eva Mendes visits
Sierra Leone in
Half the Sky: Turning
Oppression into Opportunity Worldwide
.

Wanna inject a little activism into your day?

Did last week’s presidential debate make you sad? Well, if you’re feeling like a little lift, we have two films that you may want to check out…

Narrated by Ryan Gosling, #ReGENERATION premiered this past spring and includes wisdom from Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Adbusters‘ Kalie Lasn (yep, one of the peeps behind the Occupy movement), Mos Def and Talib Kweli. The documentary deals with life facing the current younger generation and how technology has affected their interaction (or lack of) with society and social/political issues.

Gosling’s GF (is she still his GF? Who knows) Eva Mendes is featured in the recently released series Half The Sky. From husband and wife team Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn — both veteran NY Times journalists and Pulitzer Prize winners — the film highlights interviews with George Clooney, Hillary Clinton, Susan Sarandon, Melinda Gates, Gloria Steinem, Desmond Tutu and many other political and philanthropic luminaries and activists. Focusing on ten countries, Kristof travels with an American actress, introducing her (and us) to organizations and women who are struggling locally to confront and change the lives of women and children. Featured segments include Mendes’ Sierra Leone visit, Olivia Wilde in Kenya, America Ferrera in India and Gabrielle Union in Vietnam.

Both films are on Amazon, Netflix and iTunes. If you’re feeling generous, the local lefties KPFK are holding another (what seems to now be monthly) fund drive with #ReGENERATION as a pledge gift. Half the Sky premiered this past week on PBS’ Independent Lens — check your local PBS station to see if/when it will be rebroadcast. Or head over to #ReGeneration and Half the Sky Movement for more information. Trailers below.
