FLING GIRL LA came about when longtime collaborators Amy Saaed and Dina Gachman realized that a comedic online graphic novel about dating in Los Angeles was exactly what the world needed.
It all started in November 2010 when Dina was tricked into thinking that writing a novel in thirty days was a swell idea. If you dont know, November is National Novel Writing Month aka NaNoWriMo, and masochistic writers all over the world band together to finish a book in thirty days. And so, FLING GIRL the novel was born on 11/30/10. It was laborious and painful, but here we are. When Dina, the writer, and Amy, the artist, got together to talk about creating cover art for the novel, that coffee shop discussion somehow ended with them agreeing to go a little further than a book cover. Why not expand the novel and turn it into a monthly graphic novel? And so they did.
Amy and Dina first worked together on the short film Archer House, a dark comedy about a Southern sorority. Dina wrote and directed the short, and Amy created the awesome art, from DVD covers to posters to the press kit. They worked so well together that they joined forces again a few years later, when Amy created art for Dina’s comedy blog Bureaucracy For Breakfast.
Having experienced the dating rituals and customs of modern day Los Angeles first hand, they can’t wait to share the story of Maggie and her friends with you out there in Internet land.
